Orientation Visits Malaga: The Accompanied Visit That Answers “Is Malaga Right for Me?”
Orientation Visits Malaga are short, personally guided trips around Malaga and the Costa del Sol, arranged by Move to Malaga before you commit to relocating or buying, so you can see real areas, schools and properties for yourself instead of relying on articles and forums. This guide explains who they are for, what is included, how much they cost and how to book one, whether you are a family checking schools, a retiree comparing towns, or a buyer working out a realistic budget. We have been helping British, American and Canadian families and retirees relocate to Malaga and the Costa del Sol since 2010. We built this visit because so many clients told us they wished they had seen the area properly before signing anything.
What Are Orientation Visits Malaga?
An Orientation Visit to Malaga, sometimes called an Accompanied Orientation Visit, is a paid, personalised trip designed to answer one question honestly: is this the right part of Spain for you? There is no fixed itinerary. Before you travel, we have video calls to understand what matters to you, your budget, your family situation, your work plans and the questions you actually need answered. During the visit itself, a member of the Move to Malaga team goes with you to areas already shortlisted from those calls, rather than leaving you to guess your way around unfamiliar towns.
Most people who research Malaga online only see the polished version: sunshine statistics, glossy property listings and lifestyle blogs written to sell a dream. An Orientation Visit strips that away. You see traffic at 8 am, you find out how far the nearest supermarket really is, and you get direct, sometimes blunt, answers from someone who has lived here for over 30 years rather than a holiday brochure.
Who Are Orientation Visits Malaga For?
Orientation Visits Malaga make sense if you are still weighing up whether to relocate or buy, rather than someone who has already decided and just needs paperwork handled.
Is an Orientation Visit Right for Families?
If you have school-aged children, an Orientation Visit lets you view the real location of international and Spanish schools in person before you choose where to live, not after. Families often assume that once they pick a town, a school place will follow. In practice, popular international schools in areas such as Benalmadena and Marbella have waiting lists. Hence, seeing schools and understanding real commute times before you commit to a property is one of the most valuable parts of the visit.
Is an Orientation Visit Right for Retirees?
If you are retiring to the Costa del Sol, the visit helps you compare towns on the things that matter day to day, not just the view from a holiday apartment. That includes distance to a hospital, how walkable a town is without a car, and how quiet or busy it actually feels outside peak summer. I am direct with retiree clients about this. A town that photographs beautifully is not automatically a good fit for slower-paced daily life, and some popular postcard towns come with steep streets or limited year-round services that only become obvious once you are living there full time.
Is an Orientation Visit Right for Property Buyers?
If you are planning to buy, the visit includes viewings of a small selection of areas, so you can see what your budget actually buys in different areas rather than relying on portal listings alone. We do not include actual property visits at this stage. Our aim is to find your ideal location before you fall in love with the wrong property! We can also book time with local professionals, including lawyers, accountants, and business advisors, if you need them, before you are under pressure to make an offer.
An Orientation Visit is also worth booking if you have a specific question a local expert can answer better than a search engine, or if you have a business idea and want an honest opinion from someone who understands the Spanish market before you commit.
What Do Orientation Visits Malaga Include?
Every Orientation Visit to Malaga is built around your situation, so the exact schedule differs from one person to the next, but the core structure stays the same.
Before you travel, we arrange video calls to go through your questions, budget, and priorities, so the visit itself is not spent explaining the basics. Once you arrive, a member of the Move to Malaga team accompanies you on guided visits to the locations shortlisted together in those calls, not a generic tourist route. Where it is useful, we arrange for later independent visits to local schools and to professionals such as lawyers, accountants and business advisors. If you find there is an area, school, or type of property you want to add or focus on, we can adjust the itinerary as much as possible to meet those needs. At the end of the trip, we sit down together to go through what you saw, answer anything still unresolved, and talk through practical next steps.
Because visits are personalised and we only take a limited number each month, it is worth reserving your dates well ahead of when you actually plan to travel.
How Much Do Orientation Visits Malaga Cost?
An Orientation Visit to Malaga costs from €395, subject to requirements. The fee includes all pre-visit video calls to plan your itinerary and guided area visits with a member of the Move to Malaga team. We can also arrange independent school visits (if required), meetings with local professionals, and viewings of properties with local estate agents if you are buying. Transport during the visit, such as between towns and viewings, is included if we travel by car. Along certain areas of the coast and in Malaga City, we offer walking tours and may occasionally take public transport as this shows you the reality of living here. Please note that meals, accommodation, and your flights to and from Malaga are not included in the fee and should be arranged separately. If you go on to book a VIP Relocation Package or a Property Finder Package with Move to Malaga within 6 months of your visit, €195 is deducted from the cost of the package, so the visit effectively becomes free when you continue with us. As with all our pricing, please confirm the current figure with us directly before booking, since fees are reviewed from time to time.
Orientation Visits Malaga vs Visiting on Your Own
A do-it-yourself trip and an Orientation Visit answer different questions, so it helps to know which one you actually need.
If you book flights and explore Malaga on your own, you get a tourist’s view: beaches, restaurants and the areas that show up first in search results. Orientation Visits Malaga suit people who are close to a decision and need practical, local access rather than more general information, because they replace guesswork with direct answers from people who work in the area.
If you are still at the very early stage of wondering whether Spain is even the right country, general reading and research usually makes more sense before you spend money on a structured visit. The Orientation Visit earns its cost once you have narrowed things down to Malaga and the Costa del Sol specifically and need to test that decision against reality.
Common Mistakes People Make Before Relocating to Malaga
After more than 15 years helping people move here, we see the same avoidable mistakes come up again and again.
The most common one is choosing an area based on a single summer holiday. August in Malaga is hot, busy and full of tourists, which is not what daily life looks like in November. A related mistake is assuming that prices in Malaga city apply to the whole province. A well-located apartment in Malaga city can cost around €4,000 a month to rent, which surprises many buyers and renters until they see how much further that budget stretches in towns such as Mijas Costa or the surrounding areas.
Families sometimes fall for a location before checking whether local international schools actually have space, only to find popular schools are already full for the year they need. Retirees are sometimes drawn to Ronda for its dramatic setting, without realising that its steep streets and more extreme seasonal weather make daily life harder as mobility becomes a bigger consideration. Nerja has a reputation as a quiet, undiscovered spot. Still, in practice it gets busy in season, and clients looking for that calmer pace often end up happier in the surrounding Axarquía towns, such as Torre del Mar or Vélez-Málaga, instead.
None of this means Malaga is a bad choice. It means the areas that photograph well are not always the areas that live well, and that is exactly what an Orientation Visit is designed to reveal before you commit.
How to Book Orientation Visits Malaga
Booking starts with our Initial Relocation Questionnaire, which tells us about your situation, your priorities and your timeline. Once we have that back from you, we arrange a call to talk it through properly. From there, we agree on dates for your visit, you book your flights, and we build the visiting schedule around what you actually need to see, whether that is schools, specific towns, properties, or meetings with local professionals. Then we see you in Malaga.
