If you are living in the Alicante province and need to apply for your NIE number as an EU citizen, you will need to apply at your nearest Foreigners’ Officer (oficina de extranjeros).
In most cases, you can apply in person but it is much easier to make an appointment online. In some offices, the only option is online.
If you are going to be living in Alicante for less than 90 days, you need to fill in form EX15 but if you are staying for more than 90 days you will need to apply for residency by filling in the EX18 form. This green certificate will also have your NIE number on it. You can read our article about NIE and residency in Spain for a further explanation on filling in the forms and a checklist of the other documents you need.
You will need:
- The completed EX15 or EX18 in duplicate
- Your original passport (make sure it has not expired) and a photocopy,
- Modelo 790 to prove you have paid the tax – it’s usually around €10.80.
You will also need documents to show the economic, professional or social reasons why you are making the application. It could be for buying property, work or retiring here.
For residency you will need further documents such as proof you have private health insurance, a work contract, are registered as a freelancer (autonomo), and/or have sufficient funds to support yourself.
